NETFLIX: Instructional Infographic Design

ASSIGNMENT THREE:
INSTRUCTIONAL INFOGRAPHIC DESIGN
By: Delani Lyle
Assignment

The goal of this assignment is to challenge students to develop their skills in creating instructional/infographic posters that effectively communicate information visually. In today's information age, the ability to present information visually in a clear and concise manner is becoming increasingly important, as people are bombarded with information from multiple sources on a daily basis.

To complete this assignment, students must choose a topic that requires step-by-step instructions or information that can be presented visually in a poster format. It is important that the topic chosen is interesting, unique, and fun.

Once a topic has been chosen, students must conduct research to gather the necessary information and inspiration for their design. They should take care to ensure that their sources are reliable and credible.

Next, students will need to sketch out ideas for their poster layout and composition. They should experiment with different layout options, typography styles, and color schemes to create a design that is visually compelling and effectively communicates the information.

Students will then create their poster design. They should choose appropriate imagery and iconography to enhance the message and appeal to the target audience. The design should use a clear hierarchy, typography, and layout to communicate the information effectively. It should use an appropriate color palette and composition principles to create an interesting and dynamic design.

Objectives

-Develop visual communication skills
-Create instructional/infographic poster that presents information effectively
-Choose a topic that requires step-by-step instructions or information groupings that can be presented visually
-Identify and communicate key information effectively through design practice
-Research the topic to gather necessary information and inspiration
-Experiment with different layout and design elements
-Create a final product that uses appropriate imagery, color, typography, and composition principles
IDEAS
To start, we were asked to come up with four different ideas to present in small groups. Idea #1 was "How to Procrastinate Doing Your Homework", Idea #2 was "How to Procrastinate Cleaning Your Room", Idea #3 was "How to Binge Watch an Entire TV Series", and Idea #4 was "How to Be A College Student". I ended up going with Idea #3 during group discussion due to the feedback I got.
Below are my (very) rough drafts of each idea I had above.
SKETCHES
When sketching, I knew I wanted to stick to a Netflix themed poster. I wanted to incorporate the home screen on Netflix as much as I could without it getting too repetitive.
PROCREATE GRAPHICS
Below are the graphics I used on my poster. The one on the left is the biggest one on my poster, which is a person holding a remote to the TV, which is the title. The other three are used near the bottom of my poster as graphics to go in between the TV Shows.
The video below is a time lapse of the graphic of the person holding the remote. Although it may seem like such a simple graphic, it still took a while for me to get the graphic perfect.
Below are more graphics that I used on my poster, but are smaller and are all used in different TV Shows.

FINAL DESIGN
TOP OF THE POSTER

Here is my final design! At the top of the poster, you see a TV with my title in it, a clock to the left, and a person holding a remote to the TV. This is so it guides the viewer to the top of the poster, and then works their way down. The TV is supposed to resemble the Netflix Home Screen. The TV Shows on the bottom of the TV is the sequence of steps to take for the infographic. I made sure the background of my title was made to look like static from a TV, and the font was made to look lk
TV Shows/Movies

Each TV Show/Movie on the poster is to resemble a step in the process of the infographic from left to right. Under "Before You Begin" the TV Shows/Movies are "Grab Your Belongings", "So You Don't Have To Get Up Later", and "Then". The "Then" carries it on to the next part, which is "Start Scrolling", and so forth. After the graphics there is "When You Wake Up", and then "Find a New Show".
Graphics

The graphics of the person in the chair between the TV Shows/Movies are more steps. I put them there to insert a break in between the TV Shows/Movies so it wouldn't be too repetitive. These were created on Procreate, which I enjoyed making. Again, from left to right, the person is watching the show until midnight, and then they keep saying "Just one more" (as in episode) three times until it's already 3 am and they fell asleep in the chair. The next graphic on the right is them actually asleep in bed but dreaming about the show.
Overall, this project was very fun to create and I enjoyed using my creative abilities to make this poster resemble Netflix to the best of my ability! I really enjoyed this project!
